Microneedling
Microneedling is a highly effective non-surgical cosmetic procedure. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a treatment that uses tiny needles to prick the skin. This procedure triggers the body's natural healing response, leading to increased collagen and elastin production, resulting in rejuvenated and youthful-looking skin.
Microneedling affects the skin in several ways, harnessing the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Here are some of the effects.
1. Collagen and Elastin Production. The micro-injuries created during microneedling stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. These proteins are essential for maintaining the skin’s firmness and elasticity. Increased collagen and elastin production can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.
2. Enhanced Absorption of Topical Products. The microchannels created by the microneedles allow for better absorption of topical products. This means that skincare serums and creams applied after microneedling can penetrate deeper into the skin, maximizing their effectiveness.
3. Skin Rejuvenation. Microneedling promotes the growth of new skin cells, resulting in a rejuvenated complexion. It can help improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of scars (including acne scars), and even out skin tone.
4. Improved Blood Circulation. The micro-injuries caused by microneedling stimulate blood flow to the treated areas. This increased circulation brings oxygen and nutrients to the skin, promoting overall skin health.

Expected Results & Recovery Time
As microneedling works by stimulating the process of healing and deposition of healthy components of the dermis. It is expected to take a few weeks before any change is noticed and the the desired outcome would require several sessions to be performed.
On average, three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart are recommended.
Improved results can be achieved if microneedling is combined with other modalities of treatment or the addition of other products during or after the procedure.
Maintenance treatment would also be advised regularly, to keep the achieved results and continue to improve it. These can be done every six to twelve months, along with using appropriate skincare products to nourish the skin.
Microneedling typically has minimal downtime, ranging from 24 hours to a few days, depending on the intensity of the treatment.
Risks & Side Effects
Although microneedling is generally considered safe, there is a possibility of side effects and complications. These may include:
1. Any discomfort such as pain and redness experienced during microneedling is typically temporary and mild. It may last for a few hours but can occasionally extend to a few days.
2. During the healing process, some individuals may experience peeling of the skin. This is a normal occurrence and usually lasts for a few days.
3. As the procedure is performed, the skin can become red, and slightly congested, as well as multiple pinpoint bleeds are observed. This indicates a successful process. These effects can last for a few hours to a few days before disappearing. In rare cases, bruising may occur and may take longer to resolve.
4. While extremely rare, there is a slight possibility of scarring. This is more likely to occur in individuals who tend to develop hypertrophic scarring or keloids. Paradoxically, microneedling can also be used to reduce the appearance of existing scars.
5. Infections are rare but can occur. If an infection is suspected, immediate treatment is necessary and leads to complete resolution. It is important to note that individuals with a history of cold sores should exercise caution, as microneedling can potentially trigger a flare-up. Prophylactic treatment may be recommended to prevent this.
6. Patients with compromised immune systems should approach microneedling with caution. It is advisable to consult with a doctor who can guide the best course of action.
Please note that the individual results will vary depending on the individual and the targeted area. Any details provided here are general and should not replace professional consultation.
