Benign Skin Lesion Removal with Fotona Er:YAG Laser
Fotona Er:YAG laser treatment is a precise, minimally invasive method for removing a variety of benign skin lesions. The Er:YAG laser gently vaporizes unwanted tissue layer by layer with exceptional precision, helping to preserve the surrounding skin and promote rapid healing.
This treatment is commonly used for cosmetic and medical removal of selected benign skin lesions with minimal discomfort and downtime.
Conditions Commonly Treated
The Fotona Er:YAG laser may be used to treat:
- Skin tags (Acrochordons)
- Fibromas
- Benign raised moles (where clinically appropriate)
- Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)
- Sebaceous hyperplasia
- Enlarged pores (Dilated Pore of Winer)
- Seborrhoeic Keratoses (age warts)
- Syringomas
- Xanthelasma (in selected cases)
- Milia
- Small epidermal lesions
- Other selected benign skin growths
All lesions are carefully assessed prior to treatment to ensure they are suitable for laser removal. In some cases, biopsy or surgical excision may be recommended instead.
How the Treatment Works
The Fotona Er:YAG laser (2940 nm) precisely removes unwanted tissue by vaporizing water-containing cells within the lesion. The laser can be adjusted to remove lesions layer by layer with a high degree of accuracy while minimizing thermal damage to surrounding tissues.
Depending on the lesion type, size, and location, treatment may be performed with or without local anaesthetic.
Benefits May Include
- Precise removal of unwanted lesions
- Minimal damage to surrounding skin
- Reduced bleeding during treatment
- Excellent cosmetic outcomes
- Minimal scarring compared with some conventional techniques
- Rapid healing
- Quick in-clinic procedure
- Ability to treat multiple lesions during the same session
Typical Treatment Protocol
- Clinical assessment and examination of the lesion(s)
- Dermoscopic evaluation where appropriate
- Local anaesthetic cream or injection if required
- Er:YAG laser removal of the lesion
- Application of a protective ointment or dressing
- Detailed aftercare instructions
Most treatments take 10–45 minutes, depending on the number and size of lesions treated.
Recovery
Following treatment, patients may experience:
- Mild redness and swelling
- Formation of a superficial crust or scab
- Temporary pinkness of the treated area
- Gradual healing over 1–3 weeks, depending on the size and location of the lesion
Sun protection is recommended during the healing period to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.
Important Information
Not all lesions are suitable for laser removal. Any lesion with suspicious features may require biopsy, histopathological examination, or surgical excision instead of laser treatment.
Potential risks include:
- Temporary redness
- Pigment changes (lighter or darker skin)
- Delayed healing
- Infection (uncommon)
- Scar formation (uncommon)
- Recurrence of the lesion
Additional and Alternative Treatment Options
Depending on the lesion type, alternative treatments may include:
- Observation
- Cryotherapy (freezing)
- Curettage and cautery
- Electrosurgery
- Shave excision
- Surgical excision
- Histopathological examination where indicated
Please note: All lesions are assessed before treatment. If there is any concern that a lesion may be cancerous or pre-cancerous, biopsy or surgical removal with laboratory analysis may be recommended to ensure safe and appropriate management.
